Karaka Term 4 “The Beginning”

Karaka

The Commonwealth Games as inspired the class to new heights in their Athletics. We have been developing our skills in throwing quoits and vortex, high and long jump and of course the sprints 4 days a week. Now we move onto the games of summer, hopefully we have the weather to match.

If you check out the art in our classroom you will find colourful petroglyph inspired cave art, we will be creating collages next based on our favourite dinosaur .

We have been looking at cave art and fossils through our journey in the prehistoric world, and look forward to exploring Dinosaurs in more depth for the rest of the term.

The creative juices are flowing looking at a variety poem styles in writing, I hope you heard some of our kenning style poems at assembly. Communicating through letters, e-mails, and cards will be our focus for the weeks leading up to the end of term.

Maths has been fun learning about addition and subtraction using computers and the wonderful new maths resources in the class. Capacity (measurement) and money will be some of the focuses for the rest of the term, I hope we have the capacity to learn lots about money.

Karaka and the new teacher have been getting to know each other, I think we are doing a great job. The class is looking forward to the picnic at Khandallah and swimming at Wainui, maybe Mr T will share his great bombing styles with the class!

I look forward to the rest of the term and all the fun and exciting things we are yet to do.

As usual it is going to be another busy term.  We started in the best possible way with lots of fine weather to practice our various athletic skills.  And what a day we had for our whole school Athletics day! Look at all that beautiful blue sky in the back ground…

Pohutukawa’s Land of Imagination

To start the process for the World of Wearable Arts topic, we each drew a design and conferenced with the teachers to clarify our ideas.  We then worked in groups cutting, pinning, sewing, gluing and painting.  We tried our costumes on and made changes so that they fit properly and we were able to move in them.  We then chose music and wrote a poem to narrate our show.  We invited our parents and friends and performed with the rest of the junior syndicate.  After the show we reflected about what worked well on our costumes and what we would change for next time.

The show was amazing and the process showed us all the necessary steps towards creating a successful design.  We loved having all our parents at the show to  celebrate the wonders of our imagination and for their support during the process.

Rainforest Update Term 4

The sun has been shining, the trees are in flower and stick insects have been spied! Summer is here, for now at least… This is fantastic for Harakeke because it means getting back into the Rainforest is that much easier!  So far this term we have already cleared some bush and planted some trees:

Harakeke are currently revisiting the work they began in Term 1. One of the ideas we had was to think of a way for other people to appreciate our forest and look after it in the way we saw as important.  We have begun to work on ten interpretation panels for the Rainforest.  These signs will teach the school and wider community a bit about what lives in our forest and other important ideas.  Last week we went to Wellington Zoo to learn all about signs as they are supporting us through the Bush Builders program.

One of the signs will be to do with animal pests in our Rainforest.  Craig Bond (Evie’s Dad) came in to talk to us about pests and tracking tunnels.  We put four tracking tunnels into the bush yesterday.  We think there are some mice, rats and possibly hedgehogs in our forest so far – and we have the prints to prove it!

Wearable Arts Term 3

Near the end of Term 3, Harakeke worked hard in groups of three to design and make costumes for the HVS WOW.  We based these costumes on the rainforest and on characters we designed for a story that took place in it.  Here are some pictures of our costumes!
